10 non-negotiables in my future home

There are certain things that I just don’t think I would be able to live without in my future home. I’m not talking while I’m still young and broke, but when I can actually afford to live where I want. Some of these may not be very universal but I decided to share anyway.

I’m not even putting this on the list, that’s how non-negotiable it is but I WILL be living in an old home. I will for sure not be living in even close to a new build. I want a home that was built as long ago as possible. I just love the idea of living in a home that has been around for so long. Granted maybe the interior will be updated but only UPDATED not completely redone. I would LOVE some original historical elements in the house.

1. LIGHT and outdoor space

This is the most non-negotiable - I simply cannot live without good light and lots of windows and some sort of outdoor space, even just a small terrace. Last summer I lived in an apartment with an outdoor space and though I got amazing light I still felt kind of stale and trapped.

2. Color

This is something that I feel so many modern homes lack very severely. Everything is so muted and to me, it just feels so sterile and not cozy or like a real lived-in home. I want color around my home specifically in the bathroom - I’m currently very into colored tiles in showers or sinks and fun wallpaper in bathrooms. I feel like that’s such an easy way to add color to your home without having it be too dramatic.

3. Unique features

This I’m pretty non-picky about but it’s gotta have some sort of unique architecture involved. Whether it be materials or styles I just need some sort of character and distinctiveness.

4. Walkability

I need to be able to walk to most of my necessities obviously. But most specifically, I need to be in walking distance preferably under 5 minutes from a deli or sandwich shop. This is one of my more niche ones but I just need this or a coffee shop but walking to get a good sandwich is kind of my dream.

5. Stained glass

Pretty self-explanatory but I would love just a little stained glass somewhere in the house. I just think its so beautiful and captures the light so well. And again its a gorgeous way to add color and character to a house.

6. (depending where I am living) a nice yard with a pool with no fence

I love the look of pools with no fences or decking, I just think it looks so clean and natural. I would want a nicely done yard with beautiful big trees and flowers as well.

7. Gas stove

this one is very random but I NEED to be cooking my food over an actual flame, not coils.

8. Fireplace

again self-explanatory but just think that fireplaces are such a nice feature of a home and make it feel so warm and homey.

9. Bathroom with a separate to the toilet (and shower)

Very random but I really feel this could be beneficial to me. Sometimes I get grossed out that the other things in my bathroom are in the same room as my toilet and I just feel unsanitary. Of course, it’s not actually unsanitary but still.

10. Books, bookshelves, and tons of places for knick-knacks

If you know me you know I love my knick-knacks and having books and magazines even if I don’t read or need them, so my future home will definitely need spaces to house these items.
