fashion vs style

A conversation as old as time - not really but a very popular one nonetheless. We’ve heard many an important figure in the world of fashion delve into this topic, but have you ever heard the take of a random 20-year-old girl? Well, today you will as I will be discussing what I think the difference between fashion and style is.

I’ll begin with a quote that I’m not quite sure who said it first but it goes a little something like this “You can buy fashion but you can’t buy style.” another quote that I love is from someone Chanel again not sure who and if you can’t tell I really don’t do research for these blogs. Anyways the quote is something to the effect of: “fashion is temporary, style endures”

With those two quotes in mind, it is pretty easy to see and understand the difference between the two. At first glance, they may seem similar or even the same, but this is simply not the case. Fashion is the moment, it’s what’s is trending now, what is the ‘cool’ thing to wear at the exact moment. It has nothing to do with you. Essentially, it’s just what someone else decided should be popular or popularized. To me fashion is more inauthentic, it lacks personality and life. It’s just what everyone else is doing, but on you. It’s nothing more than a trend that will be out in a few months and you’ll look back on it with disgust.

Style on the other hand is completely the opposite in that respect. Style is you. It’s what you like to wear. Now, this is where it can get a little confusing - I think that style can encompass fashion. Something that is in fashion can be part of your personal style. Having style doesn’t mean avoiding all trends and wearing the same exact thing you’ve worn for years, but it means making it your own. It means not adapting how you like to dress for what is popular at the moment.

In short, style is authentically you. It can’t be replicated by someone else and it’s not a replication of someone else. Style evolves but at its essence it remains the same, where as the same cannot be said for fashion.
