in my past life I was an architect or a historian
If you know me, you know I truly do love these two topics. I also feel that they can be heavily intertwined. Like ugh a good historic, old building with beautiful architecture; wow right up my alley.
I honestly don’t fully understand how people cannot be even just a little bit in love with history. When you sit down and think about it, it’s truly, truly insane. I think people can kind of get stuck on the big historical things like the Roman Empire or Napoleon and stuff like that and can feel like they don’t quite like it. Personally, I love all that stuff like ancient Rome and Egypt. I genuinely can’t enough, I love to watch videos about it or read about it. There are just so many things you can’t even believe really happened or people that you can’t believe really were alive. Like Cleopatra lived on the same earth as me. It’s truly crazy to think about. But, also, I do understand how people find it boring or irrelevant. But honestly, history does not have to be so abstract or far away. When I go into an old building on my college campus, I think about all the students who have sat at the exact same desk as me. I think about when the building itself was built, who built it, and why. I think about the history of my campus, the history of my city, and my state. I love looking at old pictures of streets that I drive down almost daily and the things that have changed and stayed the same. I just think it’s so enthralling.
It is the same with people too. I love to hear old people tell stories about their youth, and what things were like when they were a child. My Grandpa used to tell me stories about his childhood and I would sit and listen for hours. I just found it so interesting to hear how life was and to picture him as a little boy living the experiences he was describing.
I think about architecture similarly, but also I just think the concept is generally fascinating. There are so many amazingly designed buildings and homes out there, I just have an appreciation for it. Again going back to the history part, it’s crazy to see what people could build with no modern tools and what-not. Like those crazy old buildings that are somehow also the most intricate, detailed buildings you’ve seen in your life. I do appreciate modern, simple building design, but god there’s something about those super detail-orientated, ornate, or simply just unique buildings that I just love. Also I do understand that what I’m talking about isn’t necessarily architecture but you get what I mean.
A few cool architecture-y I find inspiring
