Jane Birkin: All around icon
There’s a reason why one of the most iconic and hard-to-get bags from one of the oldest and most revered luxury companies is named after and created for Jane Birkin. Before the creation of her legendary bag, Jane was already known as effortlessly talented and chic. To me, she will always be my style icon exactly because she was those things. Her style never seemed forced and somehow completely unique and timeless at the same time. The story of how she ended up with the bag created for her is almost as iconic as the bag itself. In short: the Hermes CEO at the time saw her on a plane using a wicker basket to hold all of her belongings and essentially the rest is history.
In my eyes, she was the only person who use a Birkin how it was meant to be used: overflowing with random items and photos, strings, and tassels misaleniously thrown onto the bag with seemingly no rhyme or reason.
Now when we see people with a Birkin, theres not a crease let alone the signs of love and use Jane gave her bags. Lack of true use is something I see repeatedly throughout the fashion world. I think we all need to take a page out of Jane’s book and start USING well designed, luxury goods. Bags are meant to be overflowing, creased, dented, stained. Clothes are meant to be worn and loved and not just once. The whole point of luxury goods is that they are well designed and will last forever, so why only wear that Prada dress once.
